Paul (Mad Dog) McGuinness
PAUL McGUINNESS, AKA MADDOG was born in London in 1958 and returned to Ireland at the age of 4. He spent his early life commuting between Dublin and Waterford and finally learned to play guitar at the age of 19.
He was a founder member and songwriter with the now near legendary D.C.NIEN. The band broke up in the late 70s and from the embers started Dublin band TOKYO OLIMPICS.
He moved to London with the band in 1983.The band split up in the mid 80s and Paul continued living in London .For a few years Paul stayed out of the music business doing various jobs.
In the late 80s he found work as a guitar tech with THE POGUES and after touring with them for a couple of years he got the opportunity to play with the band when Philip Chevron fell ill. After playing a few festivals with the, by now Shane-less, POGUES, he got to tour America with SPIDER STACEY playing live on THE DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW and at various U.S. radio stations. Fortunately Shane heard the recordings and offered him the job of playing guitar with his new band THE POPES. After recording THE SNAKE in 1993 THE POPES started doing solo gigs with Paul playing guitar and singing lead vocals. In 2003 Shane returned to THE POGUES and Paul left THE POPES taking the name with him. After a brief period holidaying at Her Majesty’s Pleasure Paul reformed THE POPES and he is currently gigging and recording a new album “OUTLAW HEAVEN” (to be released Oct.2008)
